Organisers of Linux.conf.au, the annual gathering of open-source gurus, have sent emails and taken to the event's official website to inform attendees that, despite Queensland's devastating floods, the conference is going ahead.

"At this stage, the venue location is still to be confirmed as are a number of social events, though there are some backup plans in place," attendees were told.

Organisers were quick to dispel several flood-based myths filtering through to attendees. Attendees were told that Brisbane does in fact have clean drinking water, hasn't run out of food, has operational public transport and will continue to hold the conference.

"The team encourages everyone to still come to Brisbane and support local business and the community — we need your support!" organisers added.

As the flood waters moved into Brisbane last week, Linux.conf.au director, Shaun Nykvist, told ZDNet Australia that the buildings intended for the conference were well above the water line of the Brisbane River.

  • Well done Linux. How better to support a city that has been literally put through the wringer. My congratulations to you.
