Mac Tel plans $60m Sydney datacentre

Telecommunications hosting company Macquarie Telecom today announced plans for the construction of a new $59.8 million datacentre in Sydney's North Ryde, after securing land for $10.8 million.

The new datacentre, known as "Intellicentre 2" is expected to be completed in late 2011. The company will invest an additional $49 million over the next two financial years to fund the construction of the new centre.

Macquarie Hosting managing director Aidan Tudehope said that Macquarie Telecom had chosen the North Ryde location because of its proximity to the company's other datacentre in the Sydney CBD and due to the diversity of telecommunications supply and power infrastructure available in North Ryde.

"Our Sydney CBD datacentre remains the most highly accredited datacentre in Australia and this same focus on operational excellence will be applied to our new North Ryde datacentre," Tudehope said in a statement. "This new facility will support both our corporate and government customers' future needs. It will be accredited to ASIO T4, Defence Signals Directorate standards, Payment Card Industry (PCI DSS) standard and ISO27001."

The company posted an $18 million net profit in the last financial year, a jump of 70.8 per cent from the previous financial year. The company attributed its growth to its position in the hosting market.
