Microsoft adopts audio spec

Summary: Microsoft announced Wednesday it would license a number of recording-studio-quality audio effects found in Creative's Environmental Audio Extensions (EAX) for Microsoft's entertainment-oriented DirectX programming functions.

The deal puts Creative back on par with audio chip firm Aureal Semiconductor Inc., whose 3-D audio extensions known as A3D have also been incorporated into DirectX. Creative's EAX is supported by about 50 PC games; the effects licensed by Microsoft include flange, chorus, EQ and environmental reverberation.
