Microsoft readies fix for rebooting Windows Phone 8 handsets

Summary: The over-the-air fix will be sent out sometime in December, Microsoft has said. However, it has not explained what the bug actually is.

Microsoft will send out an over-the-air update to Windows Phone 8 users next month to dispel a bug that causes some handsets to spontaneously reboot.

The issue has been reported by some owners of phones including the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920.

In a statement sent to ZDNet UK sister site CNET News.com on Tuesday, Microsoft acknowledged the bug, although it did not say which handsets were affected, nor did it explain what the problem actually was.

"We're continuing to investigate some reports of phones rebooting and have identified a cause with our partners," the firm said. "We are working to get an over-the-air update out in December."

Microsoft did not, however, address reports of the Lumia 920 occasionally freezing.

  • Stick In Some Random Patch And Pray

Typical Microsoft. The trouble is, Windows has become so complex that no-one at the company really understands the interactions between its parts. That's why they can never be sure what is causing any particular bug.

    • At least MSFT gives people a December

... that poor Android users don't have. It's interesting that "many FOSS eyes" could not see there are actually 12 months a year instead of 11. I guess it's just too complex for FOSS developers to handle.

      • That has already been fixed

The patch is already rolling out. I got my Christmas back yesterday!

Wow, somebody flagged your posting. Did they think you were lying? Well, I got the update too (as did lots of other people).

Some Microsoft/Apple fanatic (It's getting harder to tell them apart) can't handle the truth? Whoever it is can stick their head back where they pulled it out of.

Wow, somebody flagged my confirmation as well. What exactly are you trying to achieve? All you're doing is making yourself look sad. Along with the company you're a fan of.

    • Are You Serious?

Instead of trolling like a pueril fanboy, you should consider spending some time in your favorite software company forums and educate yourself.

If there's one phone OS platform that had very few issues, Windows Phone is likely the top one.
