Microsoft reveals new logo - new image?

Summary: Microsoft unveils its first new logo in 25 years and only its fourth since 1975.

Microsoft's previous logo was apparently good enough for 25 years of service - debuting in 1987.

Obviously the use of logos are of vital interest to a company. Here are just a few of Microsoft's guidelines for using this logo:

The Logo must always be at least 60 pixels in width.

The Logo must appear only in a horizontal position.

The Logo must stand alone and may not be combined with any other object, including but not limited to other logos, words, graphics, photos, slogans, numbers, design features, or symbols. The Logo must never be used to represent the word "Microsoft" in text, including in a headline, product-name logotype, or body copy.

  • Logo is fine

    It fits the Metro look. It's a shame these same folks were unable to come up with a better new name for "Metro" than the galactically-stupid-on-so-many-levels "Modern UI".

      Funny, studies demonstrated that Apple fanboys experienced Apple as a religion, I guess you can say that about every fanboy (including you). If you want to use Linux, fine, but why click on this link which is clearly about Microsoft?

  • Doesn't do it for me

    The new logo doesn't do it for me. The old logo looks like they paid a professional to design. The new logo looks like something someone whipped up as a temporary stand-in until they Art Department got back to them with the final design.

    At first glance, I thought this was an April Fools joke in August!

    Sure, this new logo is simple, and references the now well known Windows logo, but from a design perspective, could it be any more *boring*? Do you think they used 'Paint' as their graphics app?

    Did Microsoft actually say that, or is that the author's impression? The old logos had a dynamic look that implied motion. The new logo is as static as it could possibly be. The logo isn't bad-looking but to say it implies motion is absurd.
