Developers are using mobile platforms to deliver an array of useful health-related apps, from calorie watchers to diabetes tools and medicine directories.

As more and more healthcare professionals adopt tablet devices, e-health apps may become increasingly important in hospitals and clinics.

Here's a selection of some of the most imaginative — and unusual — apps in this area.

Medscape
Medscape is a veritable treasure-trove of medical information: it includes a directory of conditions, treatments, medical news, tables and protocols. There's also an extensive offline library.

The app also features a compendium of drugs and herbal remedies, plus a guide to continuing medical education.

Medscape is free for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android and BlackBerry devices.
