The North American Development Survey, which was conducted during June this year, included over 490 professional software developers.

It found that while Mac operating systems as a development environment overtook Linux, Windows continues to be the most popular operating system, with 80 per cent of respondents using it as their development environment. Mac operating systems came in at 7.9 per cent, while Linux took 5.6 per cent market share.

Evans Data CEO Janel Garvin said that it was reasonable to see developers moving towards the Apple operating system due to the products the company has released in the past few years.

"Windows firmly remains king, but developers are obviously attracted to Apple's devices, while at the same time Linux has lost some of its lustre," he said.

However, Linux still has the support of many developers, with twice as many respondents choosing to develop for Linux rather than Mac.

  • That would be the iOS factor. You pretty much NEED a Mac to develop for iPhone/iPod/iPad.
