The NBN Co will later today release its request for capability statement from companies capable of laying around 200,000 kilometres of fibre across Australia.

NBN Co plans to release its request for proposal for design and construction work by June or July this year, marking the beginning of its efforts to fibre up 90 per cent of Australian households.

NBN Co's head of construction, former Service Stream chief, Patrick Flannigan, said NBN Co wanted to hear from companies that had proven ability in delivering large scale infrastructure projects.

The request for capability statement will be available from NBN Co's website from 5pm today, with responses due by 5pm Tuesday 27 April.

This is the fourth major piece of work the company has scoped the market for. NBN Co is yet to finalise its shortlist for active and passive network equipment vendors for its Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON). It also has a tender out for its business and operational support systems.

It's unclear whether the current scoping projects will be used for NBN Co's early site deployments, announced in March.
