NEC Australia has won a four-year contract with the Western Australia Department of Water, which will see the company deliver an IT platform to enhance the state's capacity to manage its water resources.

The contract — which has an estimated value of AU$4.8 million — will see NEC deliver a water management platform that will give the WA Department of Water the capability to manage increased demands on water resources caused by rapid population growth, as well as tools to better manage forecasted declines in rainfall in some regions.

Using a Microsoft solution stack, NEC will deliver an interface for water users to apply for new water licences or renew current licences. This will also streamline the department's reporting requirements and make water trading more efficient.

According to NEC, it will help the Department of Water address water consumption levels that have either reached or exceeded limits. Between 2005 and 2011, the number of water resources exceeding sustainable consumption levels increased from 11 percent to 18 percent of resources.

The platform will also support the department's objective to achieve maximum use of water while avoiding possible unsustainable consumption by aligning water management policies with operational practices.

NEC Australia IT services director Mike Barber said the contract validates the company's expertise in the Microsoft technology stack.

NEC was awarded the contract follow a request of tender by the Department of Water. The closing date for tender submissions was April 9, 2014.
