News Burst: Dreamcast hacked

Summary: Game pirates finally get past Sega console security

TOPICS: Tech Industry

Dreamcast is no longer hacker-proof. The copy protection on Sega's video-game console -- thought to be the strongest available in the UK -- has been broken and several pirated games have been distributed over the Internet.

Until now, Dreamcast has been protected by its special disc format -- Dreamcast drives are unable to read standard CD-Roms. The crack was accomplished by an application which, when burned onto a CD and read into a Dreamcast console, allows the machine to recognise standard CD-Roms.

Once the console is enabled, it can read cracked versions of Dreamcast games.
