Adobe oops: Flash Player does work with OS X Lion

Summary: Adobe says it tested on an older version of Apple's new operating system when it said Flash Player does not work on Mac OS X Lion.

SHARE:
Adobe has issued a correction on information it published earlier this week about its Flash Player having issues in the latest version of Apple's Mac OS, which went on sale last week.

In a post on the company's Air and Adobe Flash Player team blog, picked up by Macrumors, product manager Rob Christensen writes that Flash Player 10.3 works just fine on the new OS, and that the company's previously mentioned problems were based on tests with older versions of Lion.

"The final release of Mac OS X Lion (10.7) provides the same support for Flash hardware video acceleration as Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6)," Christensen wrote. "The previous 'Known Issue' described in a tech note suggesting that video hardware acceleration was disabled in Lion was incorrect and based on tests with a prerelease version of Mac OS X Lion that related to only one particular Mac GPU configuration. We continue to work closely with Apple to provide Flash Player users with a high quality experience on Mac computers." Adobe still has issues with Mac OS X Lion and maintains a list.

    • Newsflash: yeah, you pretty much do.

      @Hasam1991 Unless you actually like a web interlaced with those ex-ed out red boxes. The NY Times site isn't going to mistake your browser for an iPad.

        @rbethell Happy here, even Best Buy updated their Sunday ad for the iPad! the only thing using Flash these days are ads, you enjoy those...

        @Hasam1991

        There are more than ads using flash. There are plenty of video sites that use flash video and web based games that use flash. It is getting better but for many people Flash remains a necessary plug-in if they want to use the features of the web.

        @Old Rocker - "Flash is a pain in my ass on all systems" - prove it. Works fine for me everywhere. Maybe you should stop downloading so much porn? I am IT, and "any" IT person with half a brain will not make such a blind and stupid statement. "Too complex"? It's a tiny file with a two second download/update process, supports JIT compilation (unlike IE8 and JS), is entirely backwards compatible (unlike CSS/DHTML/DOM), and works more consistently across browsers than anything running in the chaotic browser sandbox. Perhaps you're just biased, working for Apple?

      Have you ever thought what will happen to Apple once Steve Jobs dies (and he eventually will someday ...)

      @Hasam1991 There are plenty of sites that are 100% Flash. If your browser doesn't support Flash, you see NOTHING. Yeah, those site designs and the "artsy" designers who designed them suck, but that's just the way it is.

        EXAMPLE???? Name me 3 sites...

      • And most will die a slow death

        @Tony R. Most 100% flash websites are dying slow deaths and losing customers/users like crazy.

      @Hasam1991

      If I don't have Flash, I need HTML 5 and that just doesn't work properly on iOS. Remember, Apple stopped autoplay so you'd have to use their development system for an Apple only version, rather than a HTML 5 or Flash version that works everywhere else.

      Optimised for the iPad means a prefrontal lobotomy to the code.

  • Yay! No 'skip intro' for a while

    Now if we could just work on some way to prevent web ads and skip intros forever.

      Flashblock on Firefox is awesome! try it

    • RE: Adobe oops: Flash Player does work with OS X Lion

      @HollywoodDog Well, good luck doing that once they all convert to NON-PLUGIN based HTML ads. :) Only people that really dislike Flash are Apple Hippies and irrational, ignorant people.

        @sucksyourspam@... "Only people that really dislike Flash are Apple Hippies and irrational, ignorant people." huh?

        The only people who LIKE Flash are people who are ignorant of all its problems. Crashing, inefficient with CPU usage, security holes.

        I've been in IT for 16 years, worked on a team that developed with Flash, and my SO is a web developer who knows more about Flash than I do...I can tell you we're not irrational or ignorant, and we avoid Flash when and where possible.

      • Yeah only hippies hate it

        @sucksyourspam@... when they go to a news story, and a Flash pitchman for insurance walks in to the middle of the screen and starts pitching something.
