The Apache Software Foundation on Thursday released Apache Geronimo 1.0, an open-source Java application server, which has been under development for two and a half years.

The release of Geronimo creates another freely available open-source alternative to closed-source Java application servers, a product category which many industry executives contend should be a low-cost commodity. Java application servers run Java programs, such as serving up Web pages. The Geronimo software adheres to the Java 2 Enterprise Edition 1.4 standard. The Apache development group intends to pursue the most current Java server software specification, according to Geronimo project members.
