Apple fixes iPhone 'coma mode' with OS update

Summary

Apple has begun distributing an iPhone and iPod Touch software update that fixes several glitches in its recently released iPhone OS 3.1.
Apple has begun distributing an iPhone and iPod Touch software update that fixes several glitches in its recently released iPhone OS 3.1, including a bug that stopped the devices emerging from sleep mode.

When iPhone OS 3.1 was released in early September, users on Apple message boards immediately began reporting problems including reduced battery life, devices freezing or shutting down, and sluggish performance. Some users referred to the problem as "coma mode".

According to Apple, iPhone OS 3.1.2, which began to be rolled out last week, fixes "coma mode". The company also said in the statement accompanying the update that other fixed bugs include an issue that could interrupt cellular network services until the user restarts the device, and a flaw that could cause crashes during video streaming.

  • still a battery hog
I have continued to have the same battery problem as mentioned by others. My iPhone's battery literally drains before my eyes on standby and that is without doing push or anything in the background. I really like my iPhone, but this is a clear illustration that technology is technology, it isn't perfect, even when it is from Apple.

  • battery hog? try a battery drain or whirlpool !
Ever since I did the update I can actually watch
my battery discharge as the phone simply sits
there. I wish I could go back to the previous
    software.

  • Do either of you
use wifi and/ or bluetooth constantly? I keep wifi on and bluetooth usually off (until needed) and I'm having none of the battery issues reported. Today my iPhone was unplugged from the sync/ charging cable at 8am and even now at 12:40p after 2 phone calls, a text or two, and some quality time with the scrabble app I'm still at 100%... And running OS 3.1

One other thing that may help is to have the "push" feature set to manual.

    Hope this helps you out.

  • Err, News?!
Isn't the point of news that it's supposed to be "current" (it's
the "new" part of news)? How behind the times are you? I
think most owners of iPhones are already running this
    version...

    Try and keep up.

Apple seems to be having too-frequent software lapses.

  • PS on Apple software reliability
I'm lumping together two new-OS bugs that endagered user data, several recent security vulnerabilities in Quicktime under Windows, and the iPhone bug mentioned in this article. Taken together, Apple doesn't seem to be holding to their historical standards of excellence. Is the company spreading itself too thin or trying to move ahead too fast?

  • Neither, just in Microsoft emulation mode
But Apple is having trouble keeping up - 34 major bugs to patch is a
    hard act to follow!

Why? Who knows? Maybe they want all the switchers from Windows to
    feel at home?

  • Switching the topic
Yeah yeah yeah. Obviously Apple's problem is really Microsoft. Jeez. Next thing you know you're going to tell us that if the iPhone was just running Linux then there wouldn't be a problem.

  • perfection in hardware...or software
Am not sure I ever read anything anywhere, where Apple said
the iPhone was perfect. They said it was the best phone
platform, but they did not say it was perfect. No hardware or
software platform is perfect. If they were, the company would
go out of business because of lack of things to develop and
improve on. But my iPhone is much better than any blackberry
or nokia phone that I have ever owned. More capable, more
responsive, better looking better feeling, etc...and i will not be
moving to any other phone as a result of the way the iPhone
seamlessly interacts with my computer system and my lifestyle.

But that's me. Your experience is obviously different. Sorry to
    hear that.

  • Didn't fix my comamatic iPhone!
I got the iphone a few weeks ago; I came to know coma
mode within a few hours of owning the phone. In
experimenting, I noticed that it would reliably go
into coma mode within one minute of pressing the sleep
    button.

After the most recent update, I am sad to say that it
is still plagued by this, but now it is more sporadic
(does not happen one the minute).

I disabled auto-lock, but i feel the battery would
last somewhat longer and I would make fewer pocket
calls if I could lock the damn thing without fear of
not being able to turn it back on.

The weird thing is, if my ipod if playing I can lock
it. If I have AlarmLite running I can lock it. With
    Safari, it goes comatose.

Bringing it back to the store this weekend (which
unfortunately was being renovated last week)...

  • RE: Apple fixes iPhone 'coma mode' with OS update
I had a terrible battery drain, and I am not kidding when
you say watch the bar go down. I noticed the phone was
hot one day, so I turned off the WiFi and battery is back
to normal. I am not sure what is causing it, but I just
turn on WiFi for short times when I need it.

I hope someone can tell me what the problem is, but it
will burn up a battery in about 4 hrs with the WiFi on.
I am using the Push email on MS Exchange for email...
