Apple iPhone ad banned
Summary
Topics
The TV advert featured an individual flicking through holiday-related web pages on an iPhone to a voiceover saying: "You never know which part of the Internet you'll need. The 'do you need sun cream' part? The 'what's the quickest way to the airport' part? The 'what about an ocean view room' part? Or the 'can you really afford this' part? Which is why all the parts of the Internet are on the iPhone."
The ad prompted two objections to the ASA, claiming the commercial was misleading. As the device doesn't offer Flash or Java, not all websites can be seen in their entirety, the complaints said.
Apple, however, sees the advert differently. The "all parts of the internet" claim was in reference to the iPhone's ability to offer 'full' Internet access--rather than displaying WAP pages, or walled garden operator content, the company said.
The ASA said in its adjudication: "[Apple] believed the ad was not about technical details or the functionalities or plug-ins that were available on the iPhone, but the varied websites that users could visit and utilise. They said all the websites featured in the ad were available on the iPhone and were shown as they would be seen by the user. They said none of the content in the ad was Flash or Java based and the ad did not mention any other technical capabilities of the iPhone."
But the ASA upheld the complaints, saying the use of phrases "You'll never know which part of the Internet you'll need" and "all parts of the Internet are on the iPhone", combined with the omission would lead users to believe they could see all sites and see them as they would through their PC.
The ASA ruling said: "We concluded that the ad gave a misleading impression of the Internet capabilities of the iPhone." As a result, Apple can no longer broadcast the advert in its current form.
Apple declined to comment on the ruling.

Wow!
And Americans say the US is too regulated, but they have the
right under their laws.

Why anyone would buy anything from Apple...
is beyond me. Especially the iPhone. It doesn't work as promised in sooooo many ways.
bjbrock27th Aug 2008 -
Better than the alternatives
My iPhone works as promised.
My Macs are more reliable than my Windows boxes.
In short, there are better options.

Well aside from the...
..browser which clearly doesn't.

Re: Well aside

It's great to imagine...

You world is different then mine
In nearly 15 years of operating both PC's and Macs in high production environments on a daily basis, I'll take a PC hands down. Yep, thats right a PC. My unit of choice for home is a Dell PC that runs circles around any of the high end work Macs. Furthermore, 28 of our Mac operators have Windows boxes at home....those are hard to beat numbers.

Three words, GET A MAC!
I ran windoze for years and had many, many, crashes, and
now i've ran mac os x, for 2 years and not once has it
crashed, and sure you can dig stuff up on the internet
about macs crashing, but it's much harder to make a mac
crash than windows, of course some macs will crash, but
not very many.
I use the iPhone 3g, and it works BETTER than promised,
and about needing java, rock.com requires java, and why
then does it work on the iPhone?
Get a mac, never go back.
Oh, and about the mac zombie attacks, you'll find many
mac users are much nicer than windows users, and linux?
there's less apps for that **** os than a specific cell model.
Sure, it can run windows apps, but why would you want to
run those unstable apps?
Get a mac.

Re: Get a mac!
Settle down you converted zealot.
More people need compatibility with other Windows machines that aren't crashing.
Crashing is usually due to negligence on the user's part or bad hardware. Apple will hold your hand because they only license it's OS for Mac computers.
I'm glad that personally I can go out and buy any brand of car I want to and drive it with my own license.
I'm also glad that Apple doesn't make cars, or I might not be able to go to this town or that.

Converted zealot?
What you said is true about not neglegence, but macs
don't require so much maintenance.
Write a good reply when you've given a mac a valid chance.
Apple is rated number one in customer satisfaction for a
reason!
And I will NOT settle down while people victimize apple
inc.
I used to be like you, a humanoid who never tried it, and
needed a different os, so my friend suggested a mac, so I
tried it, and loved it.
I wrote three files to enable any version of mac, even lisa
os, that way I wouldn't have to buy a console, just the cd.
There are many ways to run mac on a pc, and I know apple
didn't make them, but the reason they don't allow it on
other consoles is so it can stay virus free, and hard to write
them for, and if they opened it up for the pc, sure they
would have a bigger market, but it would have just as
many viruses as windows.
Apple made the right choice by selecting quality over
profit.
Just go to the apple store and play with one, you'll love it.
P.S. It's important to get used to it, and once you've got
the basics, you'll love it.

Is 15 years daily chances enough?
After all these years of frustration,I hate them.
Crestview11th Sep 2008 -
Profits?
You have to be kidding! Apple's profit margins are HUGE compared to PC's! All these big profits being made off Chinese slave labor style factories. Look it up, you'll see it everywhere.

Re: Converted zealot
I actually like the Macs a good deal.
It's just those posts about one's OS superiority over another platform that drives me on the edges of insanity. You know, the people who preach it until no end.
I also happen to like Windows & Linux. But one who thinks their Linux box is superior to all will get the zealous treatment from me all the same....
Bottom line..I have minimal experience on a Mac, seldom with Linux (though I use it in a vm / full-time on an older laptop) and lots with Win.
With my experiences on each, I've seen bad setups and good setups INCLUDING some precarious older Macs and some fancy newer models.
If people could learn to appreciate each OS as a tool rather than "mine is better than" and see that it's all about the capabilities of all and learn that they ALL help us out in some way or another...
Linux pretty much drives the internet from what I can tell.
Macs pretty much drive the technology behind the sound and video of what we listen to and watch.
PCs pretty much handle anything that takes lots of interoperability because they have the largest market share.
One can't agree with that is like saying, "you don't need your left arm because MY right arm is so much stronger".
harrisharris11th Sep 2008 -
Not to mention
The HUGE plathora of hardware and software choices, powerful upgrades, plus mountains of some pretty great freeware! With Apple...you get...a Mac. :o(
