Apple Computer on Tuesday said it has added former Chief Financial Officer Fred Anderson to its board of directors. The move, which had been expected, follows Anderson's retirement from the company on June 1. Anderson was succeeded by Peter Oppenheimer as chief financial officer.

"Though it is currently out of vogue to add insiders to boards, Fred is the exception to the rule," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement. Apple has been criticized for having too many people on its board with ties to the company, although the company has moved to add independent directors, including former Vice President Al Gore. Anderson is also on the board of eBay and Epiphany.
