BEA Systems announced on Monday the addition of WebLogic Portal portlets for SAP and Siebel, as well as upgrades to the WebLogic Editions of Compoze Portlets and Kapow RoboSuite.

According to BEA, all are designed to help integrate data and functionality from various enterprise sources into a personalized portal that enables employees to access everything from e-mail to financial databases in one place.

BEAsaid that enterprises have found it difficult to adapt and evolve their portals as easily as they can adapt local client software. These portlets and tools are aimed at accelerating that process and extending its reach.

The portlets for SAP and for Siebel map to business objects in those applications and can display results within the portal of user queries about such information as financial data (e.g., customer lists and balances), sales data (orders, shipping status), human resources (addresses, expenses, benefits).

The portlets take advantage of WebLogic Portal's capabilities. For example, WebLogic Portal users can be mapped to SAP users, supporting access control and data security. The SAP and Siebel portlets can be incorporated into new or existing portal applications. They can be used out of the box or customized.

The Compoze portlets support adding Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino access to the personalized portal. Developers can use the Compoze Java APIs, accessible via controls in BEA WebLogic Workshop, to integrate collaborative functionality into process-based portal applications such as new-employee processing or employee termination, open enrollment, customer service contact, or new sales contract approval.

The Kapow RoboSuite uses Web agents, or software robots, to open and interact with other Web sites and return information to the personalized portal. Web agents automate login and password submission; navigate the site; submit queries, data, and forms; and read and return results from the application directly to the portal interface.

Kapow RoboSuite Web agents can access and retrieve content from multiple external and internal Web sites in real time. They can then deliver the content immediately or store it for later access. Content items are captured as data rather than as HTML, so they can be formatted to match the portal user interface.

All the tools and portlets are available now. Portlets for SAP and Siebel are free to customers who have purchased BEA WebLogic Portal 8.1 SP2 or above with maintenance agreements. The company could not supply pricing for the Compoze and Kapow portlets and tools.
