Summary

In what could be a blow to its image, Microsoft's main Bing search site suffered through an outage on Thursday evening.
In what could be a blow to its image, Microsoft's main Bing search site suffered through an outage on Thursday evening.

Visitors to Bing.com were getting a browser error message rather than a search bar. Service was down for at least 45 minutes before being restored around 7:10 p.m. PST.

Microsoft acknowledged the issues it on its Twitter feed and said it was looking into the matter. It later offered the following explanation, posted to a Bing blog by Satya Nadella, senior vice president of the Online Services division:

The cause of the outage was a configuration change during some internal testing that had unfortunate and unintended consequences.

  • Microsoft has to do better than this..
Microsoft is already starting the online game at a disadvantage - they don't get free rides at press events, heavy scrutinization, and brand name that is usually laughed at, and so on.

Microsoft has to learn that with anything online (Bing, Danger/Sidekick, Azure, etc.), it can't afford to be as good as Google or Yahoo - it has to be 5 times better in order to get a somewhat decent perception.

It's good they acknowledged the error and worked on a fix quickly. But they can't keep this happening - we'll be hearing about thie 45 minute outage for a long time, even if it never happens again.

Another thing they could do is figuring out what happened, letting everyone in the public know WHY it happened, and, most importantly, how it won't happen again. Only through transparency will Microsoft start to regain some public trust.

Bing will soon be like the other services that MS get bored with (i.e. Soapbox). Just as soon as you get used to it MS will pull it because they rather make failed attempts to buy NBA teams then worry about customer service.

Over dramatize much? Its not a blow at all. The 45 minute outage is very brief and its back up and running now so all is well. Its not like others who had outages for hours upon hours. At least Microsoft took the time to fix it.

I use Bing all the time, including constantly last evening, and it was never down for me. Any opportunity to spread FUD about MS, eh?

  • Same Here - No Outage
Used Bing repeatedly in that timeframe last evening with no problem...

  • Hmmm.
And how many outages have there been with Google over the past few years? More than one!

  • LOL
News Corp et al, are you taking note?

If they'd been exclusively on Bing during the time of the outage, their collection of search engine news links would have moved from exclusive to extinct.

  • It wasn't an accidient...
They totally meant to be out for all that time in reverence for the historical slaughtering of the people of Jamubi that happened on that day at that time.

They are just proving, once again, that Microsoft is not a giant, mindless, clumsy, bumbling, heartless, corporate behemoth with their well thought message of loving.

    Yay Microsoft Rah Rah Rah!

I downloaded and used firefox insted of internet explorer on xp recently, and got a quick popup from Microsoft demanding that I allow them to put a "link" on my firefox. I refused and they threatened to label my xp an illegal copy until I agreed to allow the "link" on firefox. I still refused to allow their link, and darned if Microsoft didn't plaster a big notice on my wallpaper that my xp was "illegal". Every computer in this house then had the harddrives scrubbed of anything Microsoft and Linux Mint installed. There are no more problems, and it's nice having Microsoft OUT of our computers. Microsoft is way too big for it's britches.
