Chrome browser makes steady gains

Summary: Chrome is now used by one out of every eight people on the internet, while Microsoft's latest browser is also showing signs of steady growth.

Chrome usage increased from 11.9 percent in April to 12.5 percent in May, according to statistics released on Wednesday by Net Applications. The company bases its findings on population-adjusted measurements of visitors to websites using its analytics tools.

Google has been promoting Chrome widely, taking out ads, publicizing it on YouTube with Lady Gaga songs and sentimental videos, sponsoring developer events, and devoting a full day at Google I/O to the browser and its close relative, Chrome OS. The company's primary objective is to make the web a faster, more powerful foundation for software and services.

Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), meanwhile, rose from 2.4 percent of users in April to 4.2 percent in May, Net Applications said.

Sadly the looser in this Browser war is Firefox.

Mozilla can?t compete with the Google Money for Marketing and Microsoft pushing IE 9 from Windows Update.

While I am sure Chrome is a decent browser and most people are choosing to use it I find that it is installed on some computers without the user really knowing how it got there and how it took over as default. It seems to come in with other software titles and google offerings as a pre-checked opt-out option and when installed takes over as default. To many people this is not a bad thing but I think it is rather invasive to do such things.

I find Safari was another one that got installed thanks to Apple update but I think they lightened that up a bit and do not check it automatically anymore.

@bobiroc That would not be included in this survay, that the number of chrome browsers installed on computers. From what I can tell here, it measuring visitors to websites, which shows chrome usage is increasing.

@bobiroc - i've seen it come bundled with Google Earth as an option, but never seen it take over as default by itself - it prompts the user about becoming default, likely your users simply yes-clicked-thru.

I haven't seen it bundled elsewhere, but haven't checked recently. Picasa? Google Desktop Search?

I don't trust anything Google (Eyed). They have as little on me as any DB. They probably have my alter ego Mick E. Mowse-->lives in Orlando of course.

a few years ago - i installed Firefox and Chrome on my machine alongside IE - i had heard that Chrome was faster - i didn't notice the faster - but i noticed that when i ran my malware scan at the end of the day - there were often no threats detected - whereas if i use Firefox or - expecially - IE - there were a ton detected

no doubt - that will change as Google becomes more widespread - but for now - it's a reassuring difference

  • With IE's poor HTML5 support

Watch the alternate browsers installs grow as these apps (including our) start hitting the market Q3.

    • There are plenty of reasons for alternate browsers

      being chosen.

HTML5 support is not one of them.
