Captures performance metrics for client, network, server and database performance.
Compuware announced Monday the extension of its Vantage application service management product to include two new tools that help assure predictable service levels before a newly developed project is rolled out: predictive analysis with "what-if" capabilities, and full performance assessment.

Vantage is a tool for capturing performance metrics for client, network, server and database performance across the business network to analyze the root causes of service interruptions. Before this release, Vantage was focused on production systems, with the goal of identifying performance problems with an end-user point of view and troubleshooting them before they become crises.

Compuware said that there is a gap between the traditional functions of quality assurance (QA) and service management (SM), and the two have conflicting goals: QA is concerned with meeting a deadline; SM wants to make sure the new system delivers what users need and maximizes ROI. The new features of Vantage are designed to span that gap, creating a discipline of "service assurance." These new tools support that function.

The predictive analysis tool is a lightweight method for performance prediction from a lab or production snapshot. It does not require extensive lab setup or special training. Results are presented graphically and in language familiar to both application developers and operations people, Compuware said.

Performance assessment involves creating a mirrored production environment, replicating the true network and server production configurations. Servers and networks are instrumented, and the expected workload is driven into the environment so that service levels can be measured. It may be used in conjunction with predictive analysis, or in response to predictive analysis results.

The Vantage product interoperates with the company's QACenter tools and displays results from both on one console during performance assessment. The products run on and measure numerous platforms, including BEA, Microsoft .Net, IBM WebSphere and WebSphere MQ, SAP, Peoplesoft, Citrix, DB2, Oracle, J2EE applications, and some systems from HP.

Availability is immediate. Pricing starts at $25,000 and depends on the number of users.
