Downed Facebook accounts still haven't returned
Summary
Topics
As a reporter covering Facebook, I do get the occasional cranky complaints from members who, for one reason or another, are experiencing errors when they try to access their accounts. But it's never been anything like the past week, with a steady stream of e-mails continuing to come in from Facebook members who say they remain shut out of their accounts--despite assurance from Facebook that profiles have not been deleted and that the company is working on the problem.
"This is now seven days and counting," an e-mail sent on Saturday morning read. "It's beyond ridiculous and extremely frustrating."

Why do you get angry against a free service ?
You got the level of service that one can expect for a fee of $0

re: Why do you get angry against a free service ?
Many people have come to depend on Facebook for a variety of reasons, and would gladly pay for the service. At this time, Facebook does not offer a paid premium service.
Facebook makes money from every user through advertising revenue, and so they are receiving a value from their users. They should regard those users as customers.

RE: Downed Facebook accounts still haven't returned
I wasn't able to access my FarmVille account within Facebook for nearly 2 days. The strange thing is that I was able to access it from a neighbour's computer. I ran AVG & a few high-level bug detection tools but they found no problems. I never really did make any changes to my system BUT, amazingly got back into it last night. I know ALOT of people have discontinued the service because of the outage.

because facebook has tried to make itself an essential means of contact. the account, at no financial cost, still eats up a tremendous amount of time and resources, and a number of people i know use facebook to replace, rather than supplement, email. they rely on it to function and keep abreast of friends and colleagues, and much as people were upset with microsoft when hotmail accounts were hacked, this disrupts their ability to function as they'd like to in the modern era.

it's not really free. We all invest our time and personal information into Facebook as well as marketing it to our friends so they can make a great deal of money from us. Without members Facebook has no product so with that in mind I do believe they owe me a very high level of service.

Bingo.
Facebook's users generate revenue for the company, and the more users they have--and the more they know about them--the more revenue they bring in. It would thus be foolish of Facebook to take a you-get-what-you-pay-for stance with users.
Anyhow, Facebook has been having technical problems for months now. It periodically generates Ajax errors, prevents you from scrolling all the way to the bottom of the screen, and doesn't remember login info--just to name a few things. I access Facebook from three different computers, so I know the issue isn't specific to a machine. Not to mention the fact that countless numbers of my friends have reported having the exact same problems.
I'm not sure what's going on, but user frustration level is increasing.

THIS is ridiculous they should get their money back!
last time I checked facebook was a FREE service, just like gmail, hotmail, etc. people need to cool their jets. we aren't going to die if a little social networking is cut from our lives for a few days.

RE: Downed Facebook accounts still haven't returned
This thread turned from a report on Facebook having issues, to Facebook not providing support, nor caring about it's customers. From a technical standpoint lets remember how many users(millions) are on Facebook, the API's that are involved and 3rd Party companies with other hooks, and we can see where there is a huge amount of complexity involved in maintaining this network. I think Facebook realizes that there content is there users and they are attempting to right any issues. These issues also effects the advertisers as there will be obvious disconnects with their targeted audience.

Well put
Facebook is a VERY complex operation and is still exploding in growth!

Conspiracy Theory
Face book started having issues just as MySpace started taking massive losses in market share. Maybe it's the increased traffic to the site. But What better way to make people think twice before migrating away then to make some well timed attacks that take sites down.
It's just "the man", fighting "the man", man!

This IS ridiculous they should get their money back
People always claim that everyone should just
be fine with Facebook, Gmail and other "free"
services being down because they are free.
However, this isn't true.
These companies - especially Google have
revenue in the millions or billions of dollars.
They obtain this revenue by selling
advertising. They are able to sell advertising
because the users of their website spend time
viewing the advertising (whether they realize
it or not - they do, otherwise advertising
would be pointless). So as a user of such
websites we pay by investing our time to use
these websites and to view the advertisements
on the site. Time is money, so these websites
are not free and should be held accountable
just the same as any other business where we
"pay" for use. When a website believes a
business model based on advertising is more
profitable for them than a subscription based
one - that's their choice but it doesn't change
the fact that they are a for profit business
where the entire basis of their revenue is
based on their users. Whether it's directly or
indirectly makes no difference in terms of
accountability.

free=free
Unless you purchased a membership to Facebook and you pay for Google, Gmail, etc., then yes they are FREE!
If you don't want to "pay with your time", then don't use it!!
Otherwise, get over the fact that Facebook is not obligated to provide ANYTHING to you, and shut up!

RE: Downed Facebook accounts still haven't returned
It's not just missing accounts that are screwed up. I have, not just once, but several times had my Facebook e-mail become inaccessible.Today my applet bar down at the bottom of the screen disappeared.I did note that all this started a couple of weeks ago when I saw a Facebook notice that the system would be down for maintenance. Since then everything on Facebook has been glitchy. I would guess they updated their NOS and it is acting like Windows XP on service pack 1. Totally schizophrenic.
