Executives unsure of the viability of cloud computing need look no further than the criminal fraternity for a ringing endorsement of the technology, according to a security expert.

Cloud computing has been enthusiastically taken up by criminals for a range of activities, Rik Ferguson, senior security adviser at security firm Trend Micro, told delegates at a Westminster eForum on Wednesday.

"One of the things that persuades me personally that the cloud is absolutely a viable model and has longevity is that it has already been adopted by criminals," Ferguson said. "They are the people who are leading-edge adopters of technology that is going to work and going to stick around for a long time.

  • Right
    No way.

Sounds like yet another reason to avoid the "cloud".

I, like many many many others I know do not want our immediate computing experience transferred to third parties in the "cloud".

Sounds to me like certain companies are trying to put the genie back in the bottle by pushing us back to thin clients dependent on the "cloud". 'Walled gardens' anyone?

No thanks! I will retain CONTROL and POSSESSION of my own data!

  • ignorance is not bliss
    Agreed Tim

Criminals have very different requirements of a service than business.

If I was using a cloud system for criminal activity.
-Adds an extra layer of distance from legal liability.
-Uptime are less important than #1
-Data loss probably not as much a concern doesnt out weigh #1
-Data security and privacy not a concern

Business doesnt need to hide from the law
    -Uptime is critical
    -Data protection is critical
    -Data Privacy is paramount

  • I like it as long as I have a choice
I've been using Ubuntu One for a while now, and
it's fantastic. I choose what files I want
synced. It's both easy and useful.

If I didn't have a choice, or everything on my
drive was synced I definitely wouldn't like that.
And of course, if I didn't even have access to the
files to backup or copy as I choose, then that
    would be a big problem.

Then the porn merchants will use the Cloud to share photos and the police will wonder why there is no evidence on the home computers.

  • ..no?
It's not like you can't trace what is uploaded and downloaded? So that argument makes no sense.
