Facebook sent some user data to advertisers

Elinor Mills and Declan McCullagh CNET News | May 21, 2010 4:54 AM PDT

Summary

Facebook's privacy policy promises, in no uncertain terms, that it doesn't "share your information with advertisers without your consent."

Facebook's privacy policy promises, in no uncertain terms, that it doesn't "share your information with advertisers without your consent." Only "non-personally identifiable" data, it says, are shared.

But the social-networking site confirmed late Thursday that it has, at least in some circumstances, sent the user name of a Facebook member to its advertising partners. That can be used to glean a person's name, interests, and list of friends.

A Facebook spokesman told CNET that the apparent privacy leak has been fixed.

If you are naive enough to put your real info on the net you get what you deserve.
Never, never, NEVER use your real info except where it is needed, such as your bank,
Even there my address tends to be a "mistake".

Better yet, sign up with Harris Polls, etc and get paid to screw up marketing companies. It's one of the few ways to beat these companies at their own game.

Typical for Facebook.
Leaky as a sieve, in policy as in practice.
DO they expect to accept their "reassurance"?
Not really.
DO they care ?
Don't think so

All I can say is if you choose to go there & have an account, accept the risks that come with it. There's no guarantee what a company will do with your accumulated data down the road

When Facebook say the "Privacy leak has been fixed" does that mean they will no longer do it or they have plugged the whistle blower's leak.
Me thinks it is the latter.
