FCC requires data roaming access

Marguerite Reardon, CNET News | April 7, 2011 12:28 PM PDT

Summary

The FCC adopted new rules that will require wireless service providers, such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless, to negotiate wireless data roaming deals with competitors.

As expected, the FCC voted along party lines to adopt new rules that will require wireless service providers, such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless, to negotiate wireless data roaming deals with competitors.

The new rules will require wireless operators that own their infrastructure and spectrum to "offer data roaming arrangements to other such providers on commercially reasonable terms and conditions, subject to certain limitations."

The FCC said that the new rules are designed to allow consumers to access mobile data services anywhere they are. The idea is that consumers will still be able to get coverage even when they travel outside their carrier's territory by using another wireless operator's network. The FCC said this will help promote competition.

How is this supposed to work? Don't Verizon and AT&T use different radios and modulation schemes?

Not with each other

such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless, to negotiate wireless data roaming deals with competitors.

In other words, AT&T with GSM competitors, Verizon with CDMA competitors
We know AT&T and T-Mobile will (probably) merge - and likely require T-Mobile customers to replace their devices. And those two are likely closer technology-wise with GSM than Verizon's and Sprint's variations on CDMA based technology.

@Jim Johnson
You mean Uncle Charlie. Uncle Sam doesn't decide these things. But I agree it is a moot point if the great majority of service areas will be GSM under AT&T-Mobile (I claim that, BTW!) and you happen to have a CDMA device outside your home area you're still SOL. It may be difficult to find CDMA to connect to.
