Flat-panel display revenue to fall

ZDNN Staff | July 11, 2001 12:00 AM PDT

Industrywide revenue from flat-panel displays will drop 5 percent this year, according to a new report from market researcher DisplaySearch.

The company projects that revenue will drop to $22.8 billion this year. The overall decline includes a 10 percent drop in revenue for active-matrix panels used in desktop monitors and an 18 percent revenue decrease in dual-scan screens used mostly in mobile phones and handhelds. Prices of flat-panel displays for desktops have been falling because of an oversupply from previous quarters, while sales of handheld devices are experiencing a significant slowdown.

Despite those declines, DisplaySearch said, flat-panel revenue will be buoyed by sales of emerging screen technologies, such as organic light-emitting diode displays, plasma screens and panels used in digital cameras. --Richard Shim, ZDNet News
