Forums aflame over 'Grand Theft Auto IV' freeze

Summary

With the heavily anticipated release of 'Grand Theft Auto IV,' Rockstar finds itself dealing with still more troubleshooting trouble, as online forums are buzzing with reports of crashes.
Last month, the launch of Rockstar Games' Bully on the Xbox 360 was marred by a bevy of crash bugs and other glitches. With this yesterday's heavily anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto IV for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Rockstar finds itself dealing with still more troubleshooting trouble, as online forums are buzzing with reports of crashes.

Combing through crash threads on the Xbox.com forums, Sony's official message boards, GameSpot, and the NeoGAF forums, it seems that the issues are affecting PlayStation 3 users more frequently, although gamers with both systems are reporting problems. Reports of crashes on the 60GB version of the PS3 hardware are the most common, and tech support advice like deleting and re-installing the game doesn't appear to address the issue effectively.

As of press time, Rockstar has not responded to requests for comment. A representative with Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive declined to comment on the issue.

  • Well, at least there's this...
It's NOT an EA game (yet). If it were, it would never be fixed and you would be expected to buy the next version for a correct game.

Anyone who plays Tiger Woods 2008 on their deplorable servers knows exactly what I'm talking about.

  • Oh yeh!
Amen to that! EA need to be fined - they're abusing their monopoly in sports games, in my view.

If you want a football game, its EA's FIFA or nothing, really. Hockey - EA's NHL series.

If the problems are honest, I think this is a result of expansive programming. The more complicated a program and the more complicated its micro-functions, the more likely the chances to run into failure increase, especially when testing time remains either finite or proportional (to development time) or both.

If the problems are rigged, you know where to throw the stones.

I tried to post a message waring of the freeze on X360 on the gamestop site. They chose not to publish the warning. I talked with a store rep. He acknowleged the problem by saying that Rock Star will be forced to issue a patch for all the problems. I know I will not buy another game from Rock Star. I will also be a bit skeptical of GameStop since they should be for the gamer.

This is going to be rough for Rock Star to regain the trust of any console gamer. The game should have been crash-resistant, not crash-prone. This is not good press, especially on top of the bad press the GTA series has had over the years.

I want my money back. I got the collector's edition, and spent all that money to not play a game. And, how messed up of a company are you if you're going to make such a tremendous mistake and not even say something to the consumers... NOT ONE PEEP from rockstar, and the trouble shooting hotline goes directly to Take Two who says that they haven't heard anything from rockstar.

  • freeze workaround?
After spending 45 minutes on hold (thank god for speaker phone!) I got through to someone at Rockstar. Apparently GTA IV is having some serious issues with running while PS3 is hooked up to internet. This workaround might work with xbox, but I don't have one to test it happy

So, currently, if you want to play your game without freezing up, it is as simple as unplugging the network cable or shutting off wireless connection. Since I unplugged my PS3 from network, GTA IV works great! HTH~

PS-I figure I'll be the nice guy (or gal!! :P ) and post the fix in places where people can get the message without spending 45 minutes on hold (and that is after being told they had too many calls and to call back later multiple times!!) It doesn't seem like anyone else who has this info is nice enough to share it! To those people...c'mon! this world would be a much better place without so much apathy.

  • Grand Theft Auto IV is Porn for Sadists
I enjoy blasting aliens and zombies and fighting opposing armies and am not turned off by the violence of them. GTA4 though, like its predecessors, is just wrong. It is a slippery sloped piece of trash that shouldn?t see the light of day. I put those would create this filth in the same category as pedophiles who enjoy watching children being molested. I have seen the gameplay and it is breathtaking but the storyline, the S&M aspects, its overt misogynistic tone and pornographic violence turns my stomach. Why, because kids from 10-16 will be allowed to play it by unknowing or uncaring parents. I know stating all this will do no good nor will it have more then 0% effect on anyone but I had to share it. Why allow kids to screw a hooker in their car after getting trashed and then shooting them to get energy points? Help me understand why. And don?t give me the its just a game argument. Then let?s pull out our porn and let the kids watch that too. Perhaps we should ask the Rockstar owners if they would like to walk the streets that they created.

    You don't deserve it!

  • Return your game HUH?
Was that supposed to represent humor DorkyOhara. I am 46 and when I reply to a post I at least take a moment to read it. But since I assume you must be 12 years old (my apologies to the other 12 year olds) I can only shake my head. As the old adage goes, if you dont have anything smart or coherent or relevent to say it is best to not attempt real communication and avoid revealing the foolish mind you posess. And unlike D&D players I approach life in moderation. Something that you may want to consider to assure your thoughts continuie on a coherant path...Have a nice day.

  • Uhm, how about No?
Because it's fun, that's why. You don't like it, don't buy it for your kids. It's that simple. If parents wish to buy it for their kids, that's their decision, and they are ultimately the best judges of how mature their kids are, not you or me. That's part of the responsibility of being a parent, and if they choose to forgo that responsibility then it is *their* failing, not the game company's or anyone else's.

As for your little porn comment, don't be silly. With the Internet nowadays they're already looking. I was looking at porn when I was 12 and now I'm pursuing my doctorate in Computer Science. Meanwhile a recent local news story showcased an 11 year old girl who was pregnant. Sad. Ignorance of the realities of the world is *not* going to help kids, if anything *exposure* and *rational, intelligent discussion* will empower them to make intelligent choices. Otherwise they will often make the wrong choice out of ignorance. If they know the consequences of their actions and still make the wrong choice with full knowledge, then they are just as responsible for their actions as adults.

It's time people stop treating children like little idiots that need to be "protected" and "shielded" from the "cold, hard world." That is what leads to weak and stupid children. You want a revolutionary idea? Bust out that porn when a little boy is 8, 10, 12, 14, and so on...and continually remind him why he should *enjoy* the videos and not partake in the act through discussion of benefits and consequences. That's how you keep that ridiculous fallacy of the "streets they created" from happening.

BTW, way to assume and start throwing out insults. If you're going to start criticizing someone else's intelligence, learn to spell. It's coherent, not "coherant", and continue, not "continuie". Have a nice day, you bdolotic caprylic ninnyhammer.
