Summary

Google has made a $2 million donation to the Wikimedia Foundation, the group behind the widely used Wikipedia reference site.
Google has made a $2 million donation to the Wikimedia Foundation, the group behind the widely used Wikipedia reference site.

Jimmy Wales, a member of the board who helped create Wikipedia, announced the donation in a tweet on Tuesday. He said a formal announcement would come Wednesday.

Google and Wikimedia did indeed make a formal announcement of the grant, saying the funds will support technical infrastructure to support growing traffic and to help make Wikipedia "easier to use and more accessible."

Wikimedia is funded primarily by individual donations; in the organization's fund-raiser for 2009 and 2010, 240,000 people donated more than $8 million during three quarters of Wikimedia's budget.

I don't care what the reason was, I only care that it has gone to a good cause.

Does this make me a wicked person?

  • Wikipedia needs support to stay free
It is good to see different 'sides' supporting Freedom of Information. Odd & somewhat worrying that Bing led the way (did they?)

  • Bing donated more than $50K - but how much more?
So bing donated more than $50,000

    Google Donated $2,000,000.

From what we know that doesn't look like bing led the way - but then
maybe they donated as much as google and didn't say?

This is yet again one of those times where we just don't have enough
information to make a serious comparison. Maybe this article could be
expanded to provide some context for the google donation.

    Hi all,

I am a user of wikipedia and so sees the donation drive from its CEO. I can understand the reasons for wiki to do so in order to stay free for the world.

But what i cannot comprehend is the purpose of Google donation? Don't you think the money will be better spend in donation to needy causes all over the world?

Donation to any war and disasters hit countries and areas in the world will show case Google even more to its customers and the world.

Don't mistaken, I am a super Google user and supporter. Just like I pose the same question to Microsoft and its companies, why can't super wealthy companies and individuals not do more to relief less fortunate people and countries, even for a day?

Is it only average man on the street who has the heart to do so?

I wish to go on but have to lunch now...just my 1 cents worth of opinion...hope someone can note and respond here or in other media channel.

    Best wishes,
