Google tests Froogle in U.K.

The Internet star quietly experiments with a U.K. version of its comparative shoppingservice.
Google has quietly started testing a U.K. versionof its shopping search engine, Froogle, the Internetstar's latest expansion. The Mountain View,Calif.-based company began experimenting with its U.S.comparative shoppingservice during Christmas 2002 and hastimed its latest English-language Froogle site for theholidays as well. The site--which is competing withU.K. rivals Yahoo Shopping, DealTime and Kelkoo--letspeople search by shopping category or by simply typinga product description into the search box. Google'sspider technology scours merchant Web sites forrelevant product data.

Google, which recently raised $1.66 billion in aninitial public offering, is growing at a fast clip,with products for news search, e-mail and Web publishing.SearchEngineWatch.com first flagged the news about Froogle U.K.
