Hitachi Global Storage Technologies released a smaller drive for servers and other business computers that takes up less space and consumes less power than standard models.

The 10K RPM Ultrastar C10K147 sports 2.5-inch diameter platters, which have a smaller diameter than the 3.5-inch diameter drives typically found in servers. The 2.5-inch platters are similar to those found in notebooks, but at 15 millimeters are slightly thicker than the 9.5-millimeter versions found in notebooks. The drive ranges in size all the way up to 147GB. It will be available later in the quarter. Earlier in the year, Hitachi announced a 1-terabyte hard drive.
