Indian admins love Linux, stuck on Windows

Munir Kotadia, ZDNet Australia | August 27, 2010 8:19 AM PDT

Summary

An Indian IT administrator said said his entire organization was using Microsoft desktops and servers — but only because a planned migration to Linux had failed.

The Indian ICT market was hit pretty hard by the global financial crisis. Although the country's tech economy avoided going into a recession, growth fell from around 30 per cent in 2008 to just five per cent last year. In 2010, a healthy rebound is expected.

Yogesh Dhandharia, administrator from manufacturing firm Rashi Peripherals, said his entire organization was using Microsoft desktops and servers — but only because a planned migration to Linux had failed.

"My CFO told me, 'I want to use Linux, implement it on my system.' We got it implemented on his system and trained with Open Office ... and he was happy, he said it was very good. But when we started [deploying Linux] for new and existing employees, change management was the toughest area.

  • So...
    So they had a Linux fanboy CFO who wanted everybody to migrate to Linux. Then when people started quitting because they hated Linux, they had to scrap the migration.

    I find it hard to figure out whether this is supposed to be a pro-Linux or pro-MS clickbait article. I'd say the fact that people hated Linux, and that it was Yet Another Failed Linux Migration, gives Linux the black eye.

    But the "stuck on Windows" part seems to imply this was supposed to be an anti-MS clickbait article. FAIL

  • Nice try
    All the article says it that Admins love Linux but they were unable to produce a much needed change in management to make the switch viable.

    To sum things up: well ingrained bad practices induced by windoze are sabotaging all efforts to introduce both superior tech and superior methods.

    Better luck next time.

  • Wow, what a bunch of flimsy excuses
    @OS Reload

    The point is their employees started quitting because they hated Linux. Linux just isn't what people want. No matter how much you cry about it and try to justify yet another one of its failures. At some point you have to look in the mirror and see if maybe the problem isn't with Linux.

    When are you people just going to give up and admit that Linux just isn't going to happen on the desktop. It has been failing non-stop for endless years now. Just ain't gonna happen.

  • Actually I read it more as
    that Admins love it because of it's complications, they where much more needed.

    The ease of managing a Windows network leaves their jobs at risk.

    All of this IT stuff is there for the people who need to use it to make money for the company and not the Admins who often assume the company is there for their benefit.

    Also, this CFO wanted to use Linux but needed trained on Open Office? Sounds like a real pro doesn't it?

  • Of course the Admins love Linux
    ... b/c it provides them the job security as someone has to debug the core dumps or remember those mysterious 1000 command line parameters to keep a Linux system running like one piece.

  • That's what we've said about your posts all along
    if believing that Linux is superior, or that what you say to yourself makes you happy... so be it.

    Doesn't change the facts out here in the real world.

  • MS can't keep the pace?
    disadvantaged MS shill who can't keep up the pace

    From this article, it would appear that MS "shills" are doing just fine! It is the Linux shills that can't keep pace. sad

  • Yes...
    @OS Reload

    Yes it is an all too common situation that a Linux migration is attempted, and then when reality slaps them in the face, they have to revert back.

    How much wasted money, lost productivity (from the disruption), and egg on Linux fanboys' faces does that result in? A lot, and apparently they are going to keep trying. At least they are persistent at pushing their religion even if it almost always ends up in FAIL, I'll give them that.

    Deal with it.
