The number of websites hosting malicious software, either intentionally or unwittingly, is rising rapidly, according to statistics to be released on Tuesday from Dasient.

More than 640,000 websites and about 5.8 million pages are infected with malware, according to Dasient, which was founded by former Googlers to offer services to help websites stay malware-free and off blacklists.

bad programmers and not bad software. Just more evidence that there are plenty of IT people that are no where qualified to be doing what they are doing.

Not always a Windows issue.

This past year I have had issue with Dotsters Linux servers. I have a number of websites on a Dotster server that have been infected. The sites had embeded code entered into them pointing to a javascript that went to a .ru site. We had to contact dotster tech support to have them fix the issue since it wasn't just our websites having the issue it was all sites on that specific server. Dotster had to run a script on the server to go through all the html pages on the server and remove the malicious code.

So while I agree windows might having more security issue linux is not completely secure either.

Or did they just pass along the malware to their Windoze clients....

I used a plain vanilla install of Wordpress installed on a low cost host, and found one day all of my sites have been hacked. These were simple sites, meant for a few local groups. Once hacked the sites had embedded malware links to .ru sites.

For my simple sites, I'm using google sites now.

Whenever my spyware or virus protection catches one, after I immediately vacate the site and run my scans, I email the affected site and suggest they clean themselves up!

If everyone did that, it would go a long way toward helping to control the problem.

No surprise! If 'they' spent more time on the positive than the negative our world would be a better place.

I agree with the sentiment of those that do detect malware from a specific website notifying the webmaster or someone that would take action.

However, the malware used by these infected websites tends to spring from web kits or automated malware systems. Consequently, typical anti-virus/spyware products fail to detect these attacks. Pattern matching detection mechansims are failing regularly. Alternative computer protections exist.
