Best Buy has sold out of the iPad at all 673 of its U.S. stores with Apple shops. In contrast, Apple stores are maintaining stock.

"We expect to have iPad inventory replenished at these locations by Sunday," said company spokeswoman Paula Baldwin.

Six Best Buy stores contacted in the San Diego and Los Angeles area said they sold out of the iPad on Saturday, the day iPad sales began. Ditto for Best Buy stores contacted on the East Coast; stores in suburban Philadelphia and Boston also sold out on Saturday. A New York store, however, said it had some stock until Tuesday but has no stock now.

All Apple stores contacted, however, have stock. An Apple store in Carlsbad, Calif., said it had stock of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models, though it usually sells out by late in the afternoon (then gets new stock the next day). And an Apple store in Ardmore, Penn., said that it had stock of all models.

Its a marketing ploy by Apple to drum up demand. Yes the BestBuys sold out. But each bestBuy only had a few to sell to beging with. And the Apple Stores have a bottemless supply of them. I bought mine in a nJ store that had 16 of them 4 for display and 12 for sale. Well, 12 is a small count for such a highly marketed item. So now investors may think "WOW the Bestbuys all sold out! the iPad is a HIT!" Well if you give em just a few then of course they will sell out. Another marketing stunt by Apple. Good job Steve!

My local Best Buy was NOT on the list of stores to get the device. So not all Best Buys had them in the first place.

This cannot be correct. Here in Lexington, KY the local BB only sold 3 iPads. They claimed to expect to sell 90 of them, but may have changed that when they discovered there was no line waiting that morning.

The Bluegrass is pretty hum-ho about Apple.

  • wow.. whoring for apple again are we? My BB still has them.
I took one look at the thing, played for about 10 minutes, put it down and walked away.

Camera, flash, IR/BT are required by meh.

BTW: the one in downtown orlando had plenty of them when i went on tuesday.

  • Probably don't
Most Best Buys still have four demo models and then a limited number in the back. The one I bought came from the back, and it was the last one.
