Major outage hits T-Mobile Sidekick users

Ina Fried CNET News | October 6, 2009 12:14 PM PDT

Summary

T-Mobile Sidekick customers have been struggling with an outage that began last Friday and won't be completely fixed until next Thursday.
Users of T-Mobile's Sidekick have been suffering through a major outage over the last several days that left many users without access to the Web or to their address books for several days.

Microsoft, whose Danger subsidiary powers the Sidekick service, said it is "working urgently" to deal with the problems, which interrupted data service for most Sidekick users starting at 1:30 a.m. PT on Friday. The level of disruption has varied, though most users have been affected, Microsoft said.

"We are working around-the-clock to get all our services back online and will continue to post status updates to our valued customers as issues are resolved," Microsoft said. "We thank our customers for their patience and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this disruption has caused."

Microsoft said that, as of 6 a.m. PT Tuesday, it had restored service "for critical applications including address book and calendar, social media applications, IM, web browsing, media player and camera."

"Our goal is to have all services restored to 100 percent functionality by Thursday; however there may be some exceptions," Microsoft said.

  • This is why I hate the Sidekick and gave mine up
There is absolutely no reason why you should lose access to your freaking contacts simply because the phone cannot connect to the data network. This isn't only an issue when the network goes down (as it is now), it's an issue when you are out of range of the network. So if you have a spotty data connection but your phone works otherwise, you better have the number you want to dial memorized or available on some other device, because you'll have to manually dial the number. No other phone I know does this, and it is a crappy model to follow.

  • I agree....
Where is the client copy of such standard things as the contact book. Looks like a change will finally be forced upon them by this outage.

  • Can't believe
the phone wouldn't have an address book feature in it.
And who the hell would want to access the internet from some tiny little screen, I would have trouble using a 17 inch monitor anymore let alone a 2 inch one! I'd be able to see, what, like ONE word in an article such as this one (I need large font sizes.) It would take forever to see, say, just the address bar!
