Mozilla Messaging hopes to release Thunderbird 3.1 in early April, a date that reflects a new frequent-release strategy adopted from the better-known Firefox effort at Mozilla.

Dan Mosedale, a programmer for the open-source email software, published the date in a Thunderbird schedule draft he announced on Thursday.

"If we're lucky, we relabel 3.1RC1 [release candidate 1] as final and ship it on Tuesday, 6 April. Otherwise, there's an RC2," Mosedale said in the planning document.

  • Hope it's not like Thunderbird 3.0
    Is there a prayer or meditation somewhere so that Thunderbird 3.1 might not take 14 months as the 3.0 version did?

    Realizing that staff and rewrite shortages were among the problems, but Thunderbird 3 took so long that a great deal of worldwide interest vaporized.
