Nintendo to supersize DSi handheld

Tor Thorsen GameSpot | October 29, 2009 6:33 AM PDT

Summary

The new Nintendo DSi LL will sport two screens measuring 4.25-inches in diagonal diameter, far larger than the current DSi's 3.25-inch screens or the DS Lite's 3-inch screens.
Two days after it dismissed a Nikkei newswire article as speculative, Nintendo has confirmed a new version of its DSi handheld will go on sale in Japan this year.

As had been reported, the new DSi LL will sport two screens measuring 4.25" inches in diagonal diameter, far larger than the current DSi's 3.25" screens or the DS Lite's 3" screens. The DSi LL's screens will even be larger than the single screen of the Sony PSP-3000, which measures in at four inches. Despite the larger screens, the DSi LL's battery life will be a half-hour longer than that of the DSi, matching the DS Lite's 3 hours.

As shown on Nintendo Japan's official Web site, the handheld will also sport both a regular and easier-to-hold stylus shaped like a rounded pen. The handheld will go on sale in Japan on November 21 for a cost of ¥20,000 ($220.50), and will be available in three colors: Wine Red, Dark Brown, and Natural White. Nintendo expects the DSi LL to go on sale in Europe in early 2010 but no launch date has been set for the U.S.

Umm... making the picture bigger, without upgrading the resolution = blocky, smeary, even worse graphics.

Yeah, it sports a screen bigger than the PSP-3000 while producing less than half the resolution. Awesome.

I thought that the DSi was a huge improvement over the original...but if it's the PSP they are comparing, it's going to be close.

  • Believe it or not, this is for seniors
A lot of the articles I've read about this have indicated that the DS has a huge following of seniors with games such as Brain Age, but they have trouble manipulating the thin stylus and reading the small window. By making the stylus bigger, it will be easier for them to hold, and making the screen larger (even with no increase in resolution) will make it easier to read.

Japan has a growing mature population, and they may make a lot more inroads to them with this upgrade. I wouldn't buy it for my 7 year old daughter, but I'd buy it for my 68 year old mother.

In this case - bigger is better.

  • No thanks...
They got it right with the DS Lite: Bright screens, long battery life, and Game Boy Advance compatable (loves me some NES classics!).

Looks good. My only questions here would be whether the
hardware gets supersized as well, and if they are bringing
    back the GBA port.

Nice article. A 3 hour battery life should be fine. I like it a lot.
