apple does not allow rival browsers in the app store? at last count there
were about ten "rival browsers" on the app store. some basic research
before posting please. it only takes a minute. i promise.
all these browsers have to do is use the open source webkit as their
foundation. other runtimes are (currently?) not allowed, other browsers
are.

Opera has claimed that its browser for the iPhone runs six times faster than the handset's native Safari browser over 3G.
The company has been demonstrating Opera Mini on a developer iPhone at Mobile World Congress. As Apple does not currently accept rival browsers onto the platform, Opera has not yet submitted theirs to the App Store — but it intends to do so at some point, founder Jon von Tetzchner told ZDNet UK during a demonstration.
"It will be submitted, but we haven't decided when," he said on Tuesday. "We want to tune the product a little bit more. We wouldn't be making it if it wasn't our intention [to submit it]."
Von Tetzchner said Opera Mini runs six times faster than Safari on the iPhone when using 3G networks, and runs at least as many times faster over GPRS.

Iphone Dev Program is at whim.
Sometimes, they disallow some programs but other times allow it. If the program is unpopular then they usually agree but premium products are more restricted.

Its all Safari based
All the browser apps in the App Store is SAFARI BASED. They allow browser based application as long as it adds functionality and uses their Safari with their API.
At least for now it is.

Good luck finding someone that is actually going to download and use it. Everyone I know has ditched Opera due to their unfair tactics against Microsoft. They brought it upon themselves, they whined and cried to the EU now they must suffer the consequences. So long Opera, you won't be missed.

I realize its Apple and don't think for a minute that Opera won't try the same tactics on them. You see, Opera has not real support or business model so they depend on the EU to do all their battles for them. (OT) Linux vs BSD
Actually Linux and BSD are both "POSIX-compliant" operating systems. They use the same basic directory structure, and GNU/Linux and BSD distributions use many of the same basic software tools.
"UNIX" is not really an operating system -- it is a set of specifications for an operating system. Just as there are several different kinds of GNU/Linux distributions, there are several different implementations of UNIX, made by different companies.

the "rival" browsers you're talking about are basically just front ends for the safari engine. those apps are just making their own interfaces but it's still safari underneath. the app store wouldn't allow a competing browser that will use a different engine.
