Good thing I'd stopped letting malicious users into my house and giving them access to my desktop.

Computers do get stolen. That's why I encrypt my /home drive on my computers.

It's just a stepping stone. If they're able to get something to execute under your login (which hopefully isn't root), then they'll use this exploit to gain full control.

I know I was oversimplifying it. I just wanted some constructive explanations about the impact of the flaw. Before, well, you know...

The fact that it's been reported and patched, AND requires me to actively download it AND run as root/superuser...I know - it can still happen. Am I being overconfident?

LOL!! Yet ANOTHER security vulnerability for linux! This is a black eye to linux users everywhere! LOL!! Poor Linus must be crying in the corner right now. Last week it was Red Hat and the linux fanboys were in denial, this week its Ubuntu! LOL!! This is exactly why you shouldn't use linux, too many security problems.

Go linux fanboys and rush off to defend your queen! Go look for your software versions, then have to go to the website to download the source, extract it, configure it, hope that it compiles, then look for the binary executable file! Once you find it then try to run it and watch as it segfaults on you! LOL!! All this extra work so you get the false sense of security. HAHAHHAHA! It must really suck to be a linux user having to go through all these hard times.

Somebody should monitor this guys meds. He obviously can't manage without supervision.

Why even bother to waste your energy responding? The amount of posts clued me into seeing it is a wasted effort to say anything to him/her/it.

You're doing it all wrong! If you want to annoy people, you have to make them think that you believe what you're saying.

Alternatively to the poster who thinks linux users have to jump through hoops to update our systems we could instead if using red hat,mandrake,fedora,suse,debian,ubuntu or any modern linux system just use the UPDATE option on our menu and let it download and configure automatically.
No fuss involved.
Linux is just as vulnerable as any other os if not kept up to date. The difference is that now linux has become more popular it's becoming more of a target and so we are starting to hear of more attacks like this.

We hear more of this because Linux news is finally starting to become "news" to more bloggers.

I hear you. We do get a constant stream of normal updates, bug fixes and security updates. Linux is very much a moving target, and I have yet to hear of an exploit which has compromised a home user or SOHO user.
