R&D bursts onto the Bangalore scene

Saritha Rai silicon.com | November 30, 2009 5:56 AM PST

Summary

Not long ago the world pictured Bangalore as an outsourcing hub full of call center agents and paid-by-the-hour software workers. How that has changed.
Years ago, when the world pictured Bangalore they imagined an outsourcing hub full of call center agents and paid-by-the-hour software workers. How that has changed.

Today, that same city has metamorphosed into a thriving research and development center where advances in areas such as chip design, software product design and innovative healthcare products are driving profits for global multinationals.

Google's Map Maker, Intel's six-core Xeon processor, Microsoft's search engine Bing and HP's Dynamic Smart Cooling Technology have all been designed or have key components built in the city. IBM and Microsoft have tens of thousands of employees based in Bangalore. Cisco is developing next-gen intelligent networking technologies in the city.

Bangalore's makeover as a maturing global R&D base is as recent as the last couple of years. An ecosystem of inexpensive global talent, maturing skills and innovative ideas for new products and services have aided the transformation.

  • now we know where the profits went
They squeezed the American worker as much as they could and now the corporate crooks are giving the final kick.

  • Almost.
They're trying to be as cheap as possible, but will whine and complain when Americans can no longer spend.

Henry Ford was smart enough to know the system and how to make it sustainable...

  • Well, if Windows Vista and the unresolved issues of Win7 are examples,
not to mention the call centers, it's all about being cheap.

It's not about superior intellect as it's well known many Americans have to re-train their H1B replacements before being fired/laid-off...

Just the latest in the number of things America has given to the world...

Oh, if they are "global multinationals", why does the US government give them tax breaks and other benefits? Seems a bit questionable if these corporations have zero loyalty to the US, the country that built them up might I add... (We're not looking for special treatment, contrary to popular belief. But we sure don't want special treatment given to anyone else.)

  • What idiot would do that, anyway...

If that's on the horizon, then it's time to look at the want ads. F'k training my replacement. They can kiss my a$$.

It's time Congress rein in on this corporate H1B abuse.
