Report: 50M tablets to sell in 2014
Summary
Topics
Released Monday, the research firm said the boost to the niche tablet segment also spells significant opportunities to component manufacturers.
Pointing to the iPad as an example, In-Stat said the success of Apple's device would help inject an additional US$4.1 billion into the semiconductor industry in 2014.
In an earlier report, IDC analyst Richard Shim estimated that Apple would sell 4 million to 5 million iPad devices this year, compared to a forecasted 1.3 million tablet PCs running Microsoft Windows. Of these tablet PCs, 170,000 will be slates; the majority are expected to be convertible laptops that have touchscreens and keyboards.

estimates
estimates for the iPad for 2010 are much too low imho. i would say
apple will sell 6-7 million until the end of the year. adding 4-5 bn to
their bottom line.

Since when do people buy tablets?
Where is the market history to support such claims?
I guess you have to increase stock prices somehow, even if it is false. :\

RE: Report: 50M tablets to sell in 2014
I love my tablet... I quite a bit as a slate, and also as a laptop. I like Windows XP tablet edition, and have heard good things about Windows 7 use of multi-touch. I do hope they have improved the handwriting recognition a little bit, though. While good, it does make mistakes. Now, while not normally a Microsoft Office fanboy, I do like OneNote. I can use my slate to take notes, either with the pen or typing, and then save and organize them as needed. I can also share them with my other desktops and send them to others without too much hassle.
I am currently in the market for an upgraded tablet. The apple iPad is a good device, but it lacks a couple features that I would require. Specifically: multitasking, a USB port, and an SD reader.
Currently, my top contender is the Acer Aspire 1820PT when it hits US shelves. The HP Touchsmart is another good contender. I do wish it was a tad bit lighter and thinner though.
Either way, I love my tablet, and will continue to use them. Hopefully the rest of the world will catch on as the devices evolve.

Tabletpc vs touch interface.
Exist a tiny (but important) difference between a tabletpc and a device with a touch interface.
A tabletpc retain the mouse cursor, also this allow the use of right button (if the stylus have such option), and most premium tabletpc even allow pen angle and pressure.
A tabletpc, with some pros and cons can replace a mouse+keyboard interface.
Instead, a touch device is not a mouse replacement.

RE: Report: 50M tablets to sell in 2014
And yet again it seems the analysts and this community
just don't get it.
The iPad isn't a tablet computer in the same sense that a
tablet computer has Windows and keyboards, et al. The
fact that the iPad is a 'computer' is incidental to its use and
sales. It's not competing with anything currently on the
market.
The iPad is:
1. A web browsing device, simple and easy to use.
2. A sophisticated touch/turn gaming device.
3. A GPS device
4. A casual note taking device.
5. A thin client for a network.
6. A video viewing device.
7. An email access device.
8. Your DayTimer?
9. A mobile data entry device.
10. A device of many uses with 140,000 app installed base
the first day it goes on sale.
People will not be looking at the iPad as a tablet
'computer' even though technically it is also that. People
will be looking at a new way of doing what they are already
doing, but faster and with greater ease of use.
'We geeks' keep wanting to look under the hood, check the
carburetor, tinker with the seats instead of stepping back
and seeing how this is a paradigm shift in how we interact
and use intelligent devices. In not recognizing this sea
change we will fiddle with our 'table computer' iPad wanna
bes while the iPad simply changed things around us.

love my Toshiba M200 tablet
I am a teacher and would not like to be without it. I hope the iPad does well and promotes innovations in the slate/tablet computer niche.

4-5M iPads this year??
The iPhone didn't sell that many its first year (3.3M), and that was a much more revolutionizing product. I just don't see how the iPad will sell anywhere near that volume. These alleged industry reports are nowhere near foolproof. I've read so many mis-predictions that they have almost no credibility in my mind.
The problem for Apple is that the iPhone cannibalizes its iPad sales. Let's face it, the iPad is a big iPhone (or iPod touch if no 3G) with some different apps, apps which are readily available for download on the iPhone. iPad doesn't have the battery advantage of eInk, nor the sunlight readability, so it fails as an e-reader. The biggest obstacle for iPad sales is the existing base of iPhone users. Will they shell out the bucks to own two devices with different screen sizes but with similar functionality? Some people will, but 4-5M? I guess time will tell and prove someone right (and someone wrong

Plus or Minus 50 Percent
If one product announcement makes you double your estimate, how good is the estimate? Nobody believes this fluff.
