Rules that require campuses to police networks take effect

Greg Sandoval CNET News | July 1, 2010 8:24 AM PDT

Summary

The days of using fat campus bandwidth to download movies and music via file-sharing networks appear to be coming to an end.

Frat parties and free music have been among the perks of attending college in the United States during the past decade. But now the days of using fat campus bandwidth to download movies and music via file-sharing networks appear to be coming to an end.

Thursday is the deadline for colleges and universities that receive Title IV federal aid to have implemented antipiracy procedures on their campuses as part of the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008.

HEOA, which was backed by the movie and music industries, addresses a lot of different facets of higher education, but tucked in there are provisions that require schools to adhere to guidelines on illegal file sharing.

  • Saw this coming eventually
Would hate to be the network admins that have to implement these procedures, especially considering the flexibility of torrenting. Good luck guys.

  • who's lame-brain idea is this?
Of all the stupid things to write a bill for.. how about writing a bill to divert funding from war to education? How about one to require transparency of administrative budgeting, subsidize the cost of learning materials, or provide more options for required classes? There are bajillion other issues of more importance just in higher education alone. This appears to be nothing more than continued hostile behavior by two organizations (the RIAA and MPAA) that have outlived their usefulness and should really not exist anymore. They don't serve their artists and they don't serve their customers, they oppress both to help rich investors who could care less about the creative process, get even richer.

  • Less than useless
Students are smart enough to use encrypted tunnels for this stuff any more. All these "rules" will do is to push the downloads and sharing into encrypted data streams, which cannot be broken with any ease if done properly. What morons (the Feds, not the students)!

Good! Students are suppose to be in school to learn. If they have enough time to download and watch movies, they have enough time to work to pay for their own BB connection. The rule is easy to implement.

Thanks for making it clear that you prefer soviet-style oppression, and slavery to central authority, and the worship of production, as the central goal in the life of the individual.

"The rule is easy to implement."

Thanks for also making it clear that you have no clue about network architectures and file sharing. Please detail how you would secure your network to implement the rule so that you can be laughed at here by the 8 year olds who know how to circumvent your implementation.

  • Looks like the Hollywood cokeheads have won again
Pay enough bribes to your local congressman's campaign finance committee and you can buy anybody.

It's greed as usual in Washington.
