Starcraft II splits into trilogy

Summary: At Blizzcon 2008, Blizzard revealed that rather than a single real-time strategy game, Starcraft II will now be released as a trilogy.

ANAHEIM, California--For many, this morning's keynote address from Blizzard president Mike Morhaime at Blizzcon 2008 was a bit anticlimactic. After revealing Starcraft II, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, and Diablo III at three consecutive events, Blizzard had nothing new to report on a new game from the company. That changed during the Starcraft II panel, as Blizzard's Rob Pardo revealed that rather than a single real-time strategy game, Starcraft II will now be released as a trilogy.

After bemoaning the fact that Starcraft II was shaping up to be an undertaking far larger than the previous game, Pardo said the first game in the series--subtitled Wings of Liberty--will focus on the Terrans. Specifically, it will seek to resolve the conflict between Jim Raynor and Kerrigan, which was the crux of the original Starcraft. The second game, Heart of the Swarm, will focus on the Zerg, while the final game, Legacy of the Void, will be devoted to the Protoss.

Pardo noted that each release will be a fully fledged campaign, featuring 26 to 30 missions apiece. The celebrity World of Warcraft designer also noted that while the ending of each game will be set, the middle of the game will play heavily to player choice, allowing for branching storylines. Pardo also said that the second two releases could be considered expansion packs, but that "we really want them to feel like stand-alone products."

Unfortunately, Pardo did not reveal when the first game in the trilogy will arrive. For more on Starcraft II--now the Starcraft Trilogy--check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Great..... now I get to spend $150 for Starcraft2 instead of $50. Well no thanks I'll pass and pick up the Starcraft2 Battlechest in 2013 for $19.95

    Good luck with that.

    • I'm with Doubletap! I'll wait 'till 2013!

There's a business and then there's just strait out greed. This has nothing but ch-ching written all over it and noting that us poor are getting poorer, Blizzard will just have to wait for my money until the product is bound together as one and sold at a reasonable price.

I was really looking forward to buying "the" game but now, no way. I can stick it out with Brood War for another six years. No problem.

  • RE: Starcraft II splits into trilogy DOH!

bah, the blizzard money making machine, its becoming more and more about the money and less and less about the fans/customers. i was starting to lose interest anyway as the simplistic formula of the first one got worse in broodwar due to the extra units. was at one point looking forward to this then saw that it had the same brood war feel where it was less about skill and more about if you priced the unit that countered the enemy when you cant even see the enemy. now they want to split it into 3 and leave my favorite race till last and probably charge 3 times as much.... simplicity was the reason starcraft has been played for so long.

All I have to say is Bull Crap! The game has just been in the works for like 4 year + now. Blizzard... Suck it! I gave up on you and this game a long time ago.

  • multiple expansions? surprise!

Blizzard #@!$%ed up every sequal they made after the first Starcraft. I don't even want to know how they'll butcher the beautifully thought-out story of the first game.

    Shame on Blizzard....

All I can say is one word... "GREED"

Enough is enough. First we wait how many years, then you're going to stick it to us for not one game but 3 seperate games? C'mon!

Like the above person stated, I'm going to wait till its out on Battlechest for $19.99.

Thanks Blizzard for giving us loyal SC players a real kick in the balls.

I have to agree with ChkUr6...this just more greed to keep us here.

    Blizzard drops the ball again...

I truly believe that all Blizzard can do is announce games without actually releasing any. I wonder what happens to their stock price after each announcement of a game that may or may not be released sometime before the sun collapses in upon itself and destroys the solar system.
