Symantec airs dirty Web sites in public
Summary
Topics
"Worst of the worst" sites detected by its Norton Safe Web service are plagued mostly by malware, followed by security risks and browser exploits, the company said Thursday in a statement.
In addition, 75 percent of the dirtiest Web sites have distributed malware for more than six months.
Nearly half (48 percent) are sites with adult content, but there are also subjects ranging from purchasing electronics to figure skating and deer hunting. Simply visiting such sites--not downloading files or clicking on links--could put a user at risk of system infection; and worse, one's identity, personal and financial information may even land in the hands of cybercriminals, Symantec warned.
Among the blacklisted was aladelnet, a U.S. site found to carry 56,371 threats, including the Downloader Trojan.
Several Chinese sites--qsng.cn, stock888.cn and yt118.com--were included in Symantec's sample list of dirtiest sites.
"This list underscores what our research shows--there has been exponential growth in the number of online threats that are constantly evolving as cybercriminals look for new ways to target your money, identity or assets," Rowan Trollope, Symantec's senior vice president for consumer business, said in the statement. "In 2008, most new infections occurred while people were surfing the Web."

Next step
Remove them from the DNS and be done with it.

Next step - Not!
Except some sites are in that list for reasons unknown. e.g. the one dbell5 pointed out. Have a look at its report and tell us why it's on the list.

Because they didn't pay protection money to symantec?

I "Blacklist" many web sites on my local "hosts" file ...
especially when they continuously serve pop-ups.
Just making this list public doesn't help the average naive web usere stay safe (they probably have no idea that this list exists).
Stronger measures are needed (kinda like a "credit bureau" of bad web sites).

Yep. I also...
... use Stylish and a Greasemonkey script in Firefox so that when I run a Google search, there are no results returned from ANY Chinese or Russian sites. That, plus NoScript helps a great deal.

Yikes!
AlAdel, net with over 56,000 active threats?
But what's likaraoke.com doing in the Top 100 Dirtiest list, with 0 threats?

This is why I use OpenDNS (opendns.com) - they maintain a 'clean' domain name lookup database and warn you if you are going to a 'bad' website - (for free, naturally) .... and you can help with the fight by reporting rogue websites at PhishTank.com.

I don't worry about that because I use Norton 360 and my software is always updated. But not only that. If everybody protect themselves as they must do that kind of sites could not do any damagage.

Companies should do more to expose these sites. Without help from organizations identifying "dirty" sites, consumers have little way of knowing which is legitimate. As an Internet Lawyer I am happy to see this type of developments taking place.

I stopped using NOrton many years ago
If nothing else than for the simple reason that the damn thing is a resource hogger

Between keeping my system up to date, blacklisting these websites on my router and turning off ports that aren't used, I am pretty safe, but hey, the cycle never ends and one will always vie for control over the other, thus you will always have security threats, new ways to fight those threats, and new ways to go arund those proctective measurs, a cycle that never ends.

Good
The more exposure to these pigs the better. Better yet, just shut them down. Cut their power and shut the effers down already.
