Ultima Online busts gold digger

Curt Feldman | December 19, 1997 12:00 AM PST

The gatekeepers who patrol the Ultima Online playground took the unprecedented step this week of banning a player who had exploited a recently discovered bug in the UO world and as a result had mass-produced gold for his own benefit.

While this one player was not alone, the banning of the worst offender is designed to send a message to others inclined to do the same. "We just can't tolerate exploitation" of this sort, an Origin spokesperson told GameSpot News Thursday.

Those who ply the trade of counterfeiter have been building houses and castles at a rate alarming to Origin - sometimes building on existing property and at times making it impossible for rightful owners to enter or leave their abodes.

Origin became aware of the situation after some feverish building was recently detected on the Sonoma server. After investigating, Origin determined that unauthorized duplication of gold had taken place over the past weekend. The UO team is in the process of correcting the errant bug.

In related UO news, Origin told GameSpot News it plans on doling out some holiday cheer starting Thursday night. Depending on whether you've been a good boy or girl, or a bad one, players will be in for some holiday gilt.

So log on and see what the lords of Britannia think of you.
