Undercover report slams Apple manufacturer

Summary: An undercover investigation has exposed the working and disciplinary conditions in place at Apple's Chinese technology manufacturer Foxconn

An undercover investigation has exposed the working and disciplinary conditions in place at Apple's Chinese technology manufacturer Foxconn, including allegations that staff worked 12-hour days for almost an entire fortnight in the six months before the launch of the iPad.

On Tuesday, labor organization Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour released the report Workers as Machines: Military Management in Foxconn [PDF], which contains the findings of a four-month investigation to explore the working conditions at the Foxconn factories, where 17 workers have committed suicide this year.

The allegations of worker abuse, illegal labor practices and unsafe working conditions were "strongly and categorically" rejected by Foxconn Technology Group, which manufactures products for a wide range of vendors including Apple, HP and Nokia.

    • it's crazy.. plus Sony, Dell, Microsoft, Nintendo etc, etc..

@Badgered - why are these guys just slamming Apple, when every high tech company under the sun is using them?

this is just blatant Apple hating, plain and simple... as you say Apple is the only company in the title even though in the same story the author acknowledges other high profile companies..

@doctorSpoc ...gee, they all do it, so it's okee-dokee? ...hmmm, ok... Let's all give the rich, honest, hard-working big business oligarchs a nice Christian side-hug.

  • When I started my automotive career in '74 -

I worked a 12 hour shift - 7 days a week - for two weeks while my factory worked to buildout the 1974 model vehicle.

Just working those type of hours does not necessarily imply worker abuse as this article suggests. But I will tell you this, I didn't do much else except eat, sleep and work during those 14 days.

@kenosha7777 Ya,,,I worked a month straight once, but it wasn't for $.27 hr. It bought me some nice Nikon lenses.

Didn't this same report show up last year and the year before that? Seems like we've heard this before.

This year the worker in a Foxcon Juarez Mexico Plant, began to burn some areas of the plant to force them to work overtime with out pay, police controlled the situation. Next week, foxcon fired 300 employees, then a second attempt began to burn the plant..
