U.S. denies attacking Wikileaks

Summary

The U.S. State Department has denied asking other countries to open criminal investigations into Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange.

The U.S. State Department has denied asking other countries to open criminal investigations into Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange.

"We have not approached any country to encourage them to do anything," Philip Crowley, assistant secretary of state, said Wednesday. The main Wikileaks.org Web site is located in Sweden.Crowley acknowledged that U.S. officials have "had conversations with a variety of countries" about Wikileaks, but said those discussions were limited to expressing "concerns that we've had."

That conflicts with a report earlier this week on TheDailyBeast.com, which said the Obama administration is "pressing Britain, Germany, Australia, and other allied Western governments to consider opening criminal investigations" into Assange and to limit his ability to travel freely.

    If Julian thinks giving the Taliban a helping hand is the right thing to do then he probably should worry about what others may think or do!

    Assange is placing Afghan lives at risk, has blatant anti-US political bias, and leads a strange lifestyle of constant travel. Wikileaks' funding is unclear. Could it be that it never attacks Russia, Iran and North Korean because those are its funding sources?

    Should the US government take action against him? Absolutely yes.

    And no, I'm not an American. I just think wikileaks is suspicious, biased and irresponsible.

    Wikileaks is great. It's a great way to back those 'yankees' down with the idea that they can do whatever they want. They lied about the war in Iraq in the first place and they know just as well as others that they have nothing left to do in Afghanistan either. If America is so concerned about their intelligence, why don't they help the Afghani informants out and move them to a safe heaven like the US? Terrible things happened in Afghanistan and I'm glad Julian Assange smudge those things out right in the faces of the pentagon.

    @Joure88 For those of us who reside in reality, would you please enlighten us to the "proof" that America lied about the war in Iraq? Also what country do you reside in?

  • How about the weapons of mass destruction
    @MichaelWells

    Did they find any? Didn't think so.

    How is your "reality"?

  • Is that you, Mr Assange?
    You make very little sense, so I assume it is you.

  • Don't trust them
    So if I understand this correctly:

    1. "We have not approached any country to encourage them to do anything,"

    2. The US has "had conversations with a variety of countries" about Wikileaks, but said those discussions were limited to expressing "concerns that we've had."

    So the US sits around with other country leaders and talks about "concerns" but does not discuss how it might like to address those "concerns"?

    Sure, likely story.

    That is like water boarding. It is not torture. The US is just helping the detainees to talk.

    This is precisely why we need places like Wikileaks - to make governments and others more honest.

  • What proof do you have
    that would prove TheDailyBeast.com is being honest here?

  • Don't need proof
    @Mister Spock

    I did not read their claim nor quote them. I was dealing strictly with the second paragraph. My point was that the US "denial", if you apply a tiny bit of logic, is not inconsistent with what the TheDailyBeast.com allegedly posted.

    So they did not find any WMD and that means that someone lied? Who lied? How many people in how many different countries are in on it? If you have some actual proof, I am sure the NY Times would run it everyday for 6 months. You are entitled to your opinion and your fantasies, but please keep it about your own country. Which you still have not answered what country are you from?

    Lastly for those that think water boarding is torture, two quick points; first the Obama administration's own DOJ lawyer, despite all the campaign rhetoric, found no fault and GITMO is still open. Secondly, if you would like to see some real torture you can always move to Palestine, Iran, China, North Korea, or beam back to the USSR. Of course you could also move to Venezuela and have your property seized and your freedom of speech squashed.
