Viacom: Google used piracy to coerce content owners

Greg Sandoval CNET News | April 15, 2010 1:06 PM PDT

Summary

Viacom said documents released Thursday show that Google made a deliberate, calculated business decision not only to profit from copyright infringement.
Viacom said documents released Thursday, including excerpts taken from a deposition given by Google CEO Eric Schmidt, "make clear...that Google made a deliberate, calculated business decision not only to profit from copyright infringement, but also to use the threat of copyright infringement to try to coerce rights owners like Viacom into licensing their content on Google's terms."

Prior to Google's October 2006 acquisition of YouTube, Google was competing against the video sharing site with Google Video. Viacom produced Google's own internal analysis of YouTube and included statements by Google managers.

"[W]e should beat YouTube by improving features and user experience, not being a 'rogue enabler' of content theft,"said one Google senior employee.

So basically it says the opposite of what Viacom claim, that Google doesn't want to be a rogue enabler of piracy.
