Viacom to bid for MarketWatch

Media conglomerate Viacom is considering purchasing the rest of financial news site MarketWatch. According to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Viacom "anticipates submitting a proposal to acquire all of (MarketWatch's) common shares," and has done so at the request of MarketWatch.

Viacom, which already owns 22 percent of MarketWatch, didn't say how much it will offer or when it will make its bid. It noted in the filing that "there can be no assurances" that MarketWatch will accept the offer. Other companies that have been mentioned as possible suitors of MarketWatch include Yahoo, Dow Jones and The New York Times Co.
