VirtualBox update fixes Windows 7 bugs

Matthew Broersma ZDNet UK | November 2, 2009 5:36 AM PST

Sun has updated its VirtualBox virtualization software, fixing bugs related to Windows 7 and Snow Leopard.

Virtual Box 3.0.10, released on Thursday, includes a change in the way the software works with Intel VT-x and AMD-V virtualization technologies. The change fixes a problem related to the XP compatibility mode in the recently released Windows 7, Sun said.

In addition, the company revamped the Windows 7 installer for Windows hosts and fixed a redraw problem in dual-screen setups on Mac OS X Snow Leopard hosts. Sun added Windows 7 and Mac OS X 'Snow Leopard' support in the VirtualBox 2.2, which launched in April.

The update also fixes memory leaks, a guest multi-processing bug and USB 2.0 stability problems.

  • I love the title of this article
and how it implies that it is Windows 7 that has the bugs and leaves out the fact that the Virtual Box update bug fix also applies to Snow Leopard. Maybe the title should have read like "Virtual Box update fixes bugs so that Windows 7 and Snow Leopard work" or something like that.

  • PXE boot in Vbox on WDS is STILL broken!
The Intel network card drivers crash and burn - they fail to transfer the boot image properly, and are incredibly slow, and the legacy AMD drivers are not supported by NT6.1+ versions of Windows operating systems (specifically, Server 08).

Virtual PC 2007 works better on PXE boot than this, and the newer version of Virtual PC is much faster.

  • VPC has one issue though
It installs on Windows and virtualizes Windows, many users switched to Virtualbox specifically to run another system and have Windows as a backup for application compatibility.

Also, few use VirtualBox for Snow Leopard. I can see why it would have been left out of the title.
