Vista dropped for Windows 7 midway through upgrades

Nick Heath silicon.com | October 22, 2009 7:31 AM PDT

Summary

Several UK businesses that had begun to upgrade their systems to Microsoft's Vista OS are switching to Windows 7 before the installation is complete.
Some businesses that are partway through upgrading to Windows Vista are asking to swap the OS for Windows 7, according to Microsoft.

Speaking at the London launch of Windows 7 today John Curran, the Microsoft exec who until recently headed up the Windows client group in the UK, said: "This is the first time that we have had customers talking about slipstreaming the deployment of one OS into another version, so they started with Vista and continue with Windows 7."

This would mean machines that have already been upgraded would keep the Vista OS but that Windows 7 would be installed on machines during future upgrades.

Businesses have been reluctant to install Vista because of software compatibility problems and its powerful demands on hardware and, as a result, it is installed on only about 15 per cent of business PCs in the UK.

Windows 7 is already proving more popular, there are already 10 large companies in the UK which have begun the process of deploying Windows 7 on a total of 300,000 machines, according to Microsoft.

  • Are they REALLY that different?
So Windows 7 is a "drop in replacement" for Windows Vista? Well didn't
we already know this? Windows 7 is little more than a "reheat" of Vista
anyway (some less kind than I would say "service pack").

The acid test is will business upgrade from XP to Windows 7 - if the
answer to that is "yes", well then Windows 7 could be considered a
success. Without that, well new Window 7: Meh.

  • Really that different, generally no, but...
since we're talking from an Enterprise/ business perspective, for company which is already budgeted & decided on upgrading systems, to use the more recent OS offers more future compatiblity features that vista doesn't.

Branche Cache & Direct Access will matter as the % of remote workers is only expected to further grow making syncing easier.

Federated search, well if your company is planning to use MOSS or Sharepoint services, then this can help local indexing and setting up local search directors is easy. Not a bad feature to have in a labrynth of data most companies have these days.

These 3 features should translate to increased productivity & lower costs of ownership overall.

BitLocker To go, now that's a good feature to have that vista doesn't offer.

  • Yes and No...
Aesthetically, not really different no. But under the hood there's been massive amounts of changes.

And of course the biggest difference is that Win7 actually WORKS, and performs well.

  • Windows vista is just a bad test.
    Windows vista is:
    -Windows Me 2.0
    -A silly joke.
    -A pun.
    -a bloated windows.
-a "it is not my fault but oem!".
-A rushed OS just launched because MS is greedy.

  • and promptly go out of business. yey!
Cause none of their employees are trained and none of their expensive data-systems developed for Windows will work, bringing productivity to a screeching halt. Stock plummets triggering a selloff and by the end of the day, all the employees have been laid off. Apple never gets paid as the company is forced to declare bankruptcy and Jobs decides yet again to stop persuing the enterprise market as it only tarnishes Apples image and those guys go under so fast once they switch that its not profitable either. And it all comes full circle. Yey!

  • It'd be worse than that...

The people responsible for such a decision would also likely be lynched by said stock holders for making such a daft decision.

  • question: how many physical CPUs will Windows 7 support?
A fellow who works in animation and graphics may want me to build a rendering workstation with as many as 4 phyiscal CPUs.

AMD has six core and eight core CPUs. That would mean he could have as many as 4 CPUs with a total of 32 cores.

What I would like to find out about Windows 7: will it support more than two physical CPUs? Other versions of Windows such as Vista, XP, 2000, NT, Bob, etc. only supported two physical CPUs.

    Anyone out there know?

    Thanks.

  • Nope, only two...
Windows 7 still does not support more than 2 physical processors. As a matter of fact all of the limitations in Vista are also in Windows 7 that I can see with few exceptions. Your essentially buying better driver support.

Oh, you can actually run more then one flash device now. So they did fix a couple things.
