Lumia at heart, Nokia services rock

Last week at Mobile World Congress, Nokia announced a couple of new Lumia Windows Phone devices to further populate their Lumia family. Nokia now has devices across the pricing and specification spectrum to meet the needs of everyone.

As Kevin and I were chatting on MobileTechRoundup show #291 this weekend, I had realized that I didn't have a firm grasp of the differences between all the Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices, so thought I would put together a summary post and gallery.

There are variants for US carriers, but let's just stick with the core series as announced by Nokia. We have the 520, 620, 720, 820, and 920. All these devices run Windows Phone 8, so the software experience is about the same across the device lineup. I recommend Nokia for Windows Phone buyers due to their free included services and exclusive apps, such as Nokia Music, HERE Drive, multiple camera lenses, ESPN Hub, and more. We have also seen Nokia rolling out software updates much faster than any other Windows Phone manufacturer.

  • Lumia 820

    I just returned this phone. I had purchased it with high hopes to replace my wp7 SamSung focus and it fell short. Not in the features - they rocked - but alas in the call quality. Something that I never expected from Nokia. Receiving calls were fine - the voice came in loud, rich and perfect. But the people I was calling all had a very hard time hearing me. They complained that the voice was low and very tinny - like I was speaking out of a tin can - and then the voice would go in and out so they only heard every other word. I loved the phone features. The build quality was amazing - but if I couldnt use it to make calls, then it was a show stopper. I wish Noklia would admit there is a problem with the 820 as a lot of people are complaining about the very same issues (http://forums.wpcentral.com/nokia-lumia-820/206533-nokia-lumia-820-voice-quality-issues.html). I tried a new sim card and even tested a different 820 phone at the AT&T store, but it was all the same. Im surprised it isnt making a bigger story since this was so important for Nokia to get right. And they failed.

    • No issues here

      I got an 820 at work when they first came out, and have had no issues with call quality beyond the usual bad ATT service coverage.

    • On Verizon it's the 822

      supposedly same innards, different exterior, (too bad, I like the shape and colores of the 820 vs 822) so maybe I'll search on 822, just to see.

      • ditch your carrier and grab a 920 on att

        You'll be glad you did, and it's hardly pricey, 2 for $99 and you get wireless chargers for free.

        I was worried I'd loose coverage leaving Verizon, but not a bit.

        • Work pays for mine

          I'ts my phone and plan, but since we use Verizon here at where I work, they pay for mine each month.

          Hate to give up "free service", just for the 920, but it's tempting :)

          • Stay on Verizon and wait for the next Nokia

            Why switch to AT&T for the 920 if Verizon will (very likely) sell a 920 variant or even new flagship at some point later this year.

            I'd say wait and see.

    • At first

      I also had isssues, but these were on my end (The volume of the speaker seemed to go down during the call, even though I didn't actually lower the volume). I simply reset the phone and no issues since.

      I actually think the 820 is better than the 920, it has a smaller screen (which in my book is a positive) and it has expandable storage. Apart from the camera, they are pretty much the same specs.

    • Surprising

      I am surprised that you did not like 820 call quality. I have lumia 920 and after samsung focus it just like a breath of fresh air. All my previous cell phones pretty much sucked. I had LG, Samsung, Sony-ericsson and none of them had call quality that nokia 920 has. No idea what is so great about nokia but it has call quality that is better than my landline. Pretty amazing. Maybe you got a bad phone or maybe 820 just sucks but 920 is so awesome that I am sure that my next phone will be lumia. With windows phone system or without it does not matter. Now I just love nokia. I may sound like I am astroturfing but I do not work for nokia. I just love my lumia 920.

      I don't have that problem. It sounds like you have a faulty device. Try contacting Nokia Care and if all else fails you might get a replacement handset.

  • I'm in love with my Lumia 820

    and the best thing i like about the device is the quality apps that Nokia makes..hoping for some more quality apps from Nokia this year

  • Nokia 800

    I have a Nokia 800 with W7 and it is the best phone I have ever had.

    W7 was a little different coming from my iPhone 3 but, after a couple of days, I just fell in love with it.

    Now I cant wait for my plan to run out so that I cn upgrade to a 920 with W8.

    I was surprised but there is absolutely no doubt that Nokia combined with Windows make the best phone experience you can get today.
