NT Budget looks to cloud, virtualisation

The Northern Territory Government has outed plans to invest in private cloud and virtualisation in the 2012-13 budget cycle, in an attempt to improve cost effectiveness.

According to budget documents, the Northern Territory Government has laid out $20 million over the next 12 months for modernising, virtualising and greening its datacentre environment.

Strategic priorities identified by the government include:

  • Targeting reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from the government datacentre facility

  • Implementing a private cloud computing model to save agencies from having to buy their own kit

  • Beefing up disaster-recovery infrastructure

  • Modernising mainframe technology environments to improve value for money

  • Virtualising servers to reduce the physical footprint in datacentres

  • Launching a review into the Northern Territory Government's identity and access-management system to ensure that it meets agency requirements.

The NT Government will spend $800,000 on expanding its data-storage system, $200,000 on upgrading its automated tape data backup library system and $600,000 to ramp up its virtualisation initiative.
